For those who have not noticed, social media has truly taken the traditional job search to levels many could have never imagined. It has been said that the traditional resume is quickly moving out, while networking, branding, and ‘getting noticed’ is the new way to find a job. Does this hold true for educators?
For most purposes, it does hold true. Many educators are working outside of the classroom and/or are looking for work in the corporate world. School districts are slowly starting to use social media, however, there is a fine line as to how it is used, what is appropriate, etc.
Believe it or not, administrators are using social media to find their next best teacher, while others are still using the traditional resume. In the education world, a resume is still an important part of the job seeker’s toolkit. However, getting the resume in front of the right person is key, and this is where social media and networking have found their place in the job search realm.
Regardless if one is currently teaching or not, it is imperative to know about all of the social media tools, how to use them appropriately, and to be up-to-date and current now (regardless of employment status). Don’t wait to make 100 connections when a job is at risk. Be prepared, make contacts, participate and be known on the internet.
As many of us have learned, a tenured teaching job does not mean one has a guaranteed position for life. The economy is constantly changing, the education world has been turned upside down over the past few years, and technology has moved faster than anyone could have anticipated.
With that said, today I would like to share a tool that I recently completed, my visual CV. This is a resume on steroids..just kidding..
This is the professional story of my life, displaying where I want to go and what I want to give. Always keep in mind, an employer wants to know what one can give, not what one wants.
Please download this CV for your own guide, should you like to create one. If you watch it on SlideShare, it will be in basic form. Downloading it will provide all of the music and ‘bells and whistles’.
Enjoy!
