51Talk is the largest online English education platform in China. In June 2016, it became a publicly listed company on the New York Stock Exchange (COE). 51Talk’s mission is to make quality education accessible and affordable, and to enable students to talk to the world. 51Talk currently has over 10,000 teachers worldwide along with 100,000 quarterly active students.

Young Chinese Students Visit New York for an English Competition

On August 15, 2017, 51Talk brought students from China to New York to compete in an English competition titled: The 51Talk Star Final. The contest was held at the New York Stock Exchange, where 51Talk’s top students gathered to take place in its first annual academic competition. Each student had one or both parents there for support.

The Competition

Four judges were present, including representatives from TESOL, Highlights, the American International School of Utah, and 51Talk.

Each student had a chance to perform the following three tasks:
1. Give a speech on a subject prepared by 51Talk
2. Answer questions from the judges about that speech
3. give a final speech on a topic of his/her choosing

The Outcome

The judges rated each student, and at the end, winners were chosen for different levels of K-12 education. The two overall winners each took home a prize of 10,000 RMB ($1,500 USD).

The event was held at the New York Stock exchange, where just over a year earlier 51Talk went public. There will be another competition next year.

And, the students had a chance to tour around the floor of the stock exchange and learn more about the historic location.

Stay tuned to learn more about the winners, and the teachers who helped to make all of this possible.
