Fulfilling your elective quota is not something all college students prefer to get their degree.

Elective courses can offer an excellent opportunity for students who want to improve their health at the same time they’re working on padding their GPA. Many university elective courses carry significant health benefits—some in ways that you may have never considered.

Here is a rundown of our favorite college elective courses that will ultimately improve your health.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is a great way to build up strength in your hands and feet. It also improves concentration and situational awareness by requiring climbers to continually keep track of where they planted their feet prior–while plotting their next move. Many university fitness centers have rock walls now as well.

If you’re lucky enough to live in a region with natural rock climbing opportunities, take an afternoon free from classes to take a trip and enjoy the great outdoors while performing the healthy activity of rock climbing.

CPR Classes

According to Student CPR, most schools offer classes to teach students CPR and first aid proficiency. At the end of the program, many offer CPR certification following a test. CPR and first aid techniques save lives, so knowing how to perform it in case of an emergency is essential for any overall approach to health.

Yoga

Yoga classes are offered at many universities around the country. In fact, according to Strala Yoga, yoga classes are offered by prestigious Ivy League Schools. Yoga is the traditional Indian practice of stretching combined with meditation as part of a holistic spiritual practice. Yoga can improve flexibility, promote peace of mind, and benefit cardiovascular function. If you’re stressed as a student, yoga might be a good class for you to take, as it can help you to meditate and be more at ease.

Nutrition

According to Options for Youth, eating healthy is one of the most effective medicines known. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, with a focus on eliminating processed foods is the key to long-term health. Starting a healthy lifestyle depends on knowing what to eat and what to avoid. You can gain this valuable knowledge in a university nutrition class.

Being a student leaves little time for things like nutrition and exercise, but it’s essential to make time to take care of yourself. Doing so can help you to have more energy and perform better in school. When selecting your schedule next semester, consider these health-promoting options for your elective requirements.
