In this edisode of the EduJedi Report, your host LeiLani Cauthen, CEO and Publisher at the Learning Counsel, discusses what EduJedi are seeing as changes in expectations and what schools will need to do to overcome “hidden” frictions. According to Cauthen, “Schools are going to be surprised and confused by this cultural shift in communications patterns if they don’t change to meet it, especially since the pandemic. They will see lower and lower achievement because the quantity and fast mode desired for him, human interaction is not met by the majority of teachers who don’t understand that they have these skills or windows of attention in which to teach. If they go pass that, students get antsy and they sort of mentally check out. Teachers are not at the speed of feed required now. Not that the young people haven’t always had somewhat short attention spans, but the devices have made it so the lack of fast successive, but concisely delivered information, not moving along to a next sort of feed, but drawn out, exacerbates that student’s urge to turn on their phone, maybe under their desk, and get on all those channels to the point where if it continues with a teacher sort of droning on, they just want to leave.

Maybe they want to go homeschool because they’re bored. You’re not at the same time rate of speed that they are at. So conversely, schools not understanding that relaxed interpersonal communication skills are missing, and have to be developed just the same as math skill and other skills. They’re going to lose more students. This will be real surprising for people and they won’t know why, but it has to do with this uncomfortableness of having to be with actual people.”
